so happy to sit on this bench with my wife during our honeymoon trip to California. We are from China, and would like to know the story of JOHN MICHAEL COURTNEY
Dear Lin Liu, I’m so glad you found my father’s bench. I’m not sure what to tell you about Dad. I’ll start by saying that John Michael Courtney was a good and happy man. He was a lover of nature, and he truly was grateful for every day life gave him. John married the love of his life and had three children. We all thought the world of our father, who was a caring Physical Therapist in his professional life, helping people to recover from injury and pain. Dad hiked and traveled as much as he could–he wanted to see the world, and he was always physically active and health conscious. Before he died, Dad had time–thank goodness–to sit on a bench in the very spot where his bench is now, and teach his oldest grandchild to love the natural world, too. Just as he was grateful for life, we are still grateful for him–every day. I know he would be happy to learn that you–all the way from China–were able to sit for a while and enjoy the beauty of that spectacular view. It brings us all together. Thank you for reaching out. Warmly, John’s daughter, Laura.
Hi, Laura, thanks for your warm reply! Now we feel it’s not just a bench, but a man’s kindness and interesting life! My wife is also happy to see your reply, and we decided to sit on this bench again in our next travel!
You took such beautiful pictures of this bench honoring my father. Thank you! He was a wonderful man . . . grateful for every day.
I’m happy you found this site and these photos. I see his bench often and love the sentiment. Here’s to your father.
